Effect of Magnesia Stabilized Zirconia (Mg-PSZ) on The Performance and Emission Charecteristics of Di Diesel Engine

Diesel engines being inferior in their emission characteristics are under greater scrutiny. Intensive research efforts are ongoing for improving fuel consumption and exhaust emissions from diesel engines. For improving performance of engine, Ceramic based Thermal barrier Coating plays a major role. Tests were performed on four stroke, single cylinder, DI diesel engine whose piston crown, cylinder head were coated with a 150 μm thickness of ZrO2-24MgO (Mg-PSZ) over a 50μm thickness of NiCrAlY bond coat. The working conditions of engine were kept same for Normal Engine (without coating) and Coated Engine (Mg-PSZ) to ensure a comparison between the two configurations of the engine. The results showed an increase in thermal efficiency and reduction in specific fuel consumption.CO, HC and NOx were reduced.
